WHY COACHING INSTITUTES IS A BIG BUSINESS IN INDIA

Recently, I was reading a article regarding the salary of the teachers or faculty hired in IIT-JEE coaching institutes. However, even after knowing that they are getting a package of around 1 crore annually , I wasn’t even surprised at all. If we take a look at today’s scenario, where every engineering aspirant wants to go to IIT JEE and that’s obvious as you won’t get a better campus placement than IIT unless you are very hardworking or lucky. IIT is not only about the placements but also about the “status in the society” , among your friends and among your parent’s friends. Engineering students are broadly classified as IITians and Non-IITians. You won’t hear anyone saying  that “his son is a NITian ” or something like that. But when someone says “his friend or son is an IITian” you automatically make a conclusion regarding his intelligence and desire to be at his place.

IIT Coaching

Now, every high school pass-out wants to get this respect (even I wanted the same at my time) and this so called “IITian” tag and yes that’s the reason for  the high cutoff and competition in IITs. It is always said, “to get the best, you need to be best“, and yes if you want to be at the top, you need to work better than anyone else.

However, I consider coaching institutes attracting students with their previous achievements and selections completely absurd. New aspirants in desire to be at the top are easily attracted by such coaching institutes. According to the stats I read on a  blog, among 12.5 lacs students appeared for IIT JEE this year, 1.5 lacs of students were taking the help from these coaching institutes. That means coaching institutes which are charging around 1 lacs fees of this course are generating around 15 billion of market. Wow! This is just beyond imagination. So that means, if you have some money which you can invest in opening a coaching institute , you can enroll yourself in the share of Rs. 15 billion market.

In case you don’t have enough money to open a coaching institute, graduate yourself as an IITian, get yourself hired as a faculty in such institutes and then you can easily get a 1 crore package. That means, whatever creativity you learned in your 4 years of engineering is of no use. Well it isn’t wrong at all , in fact , getting a 1 crore package is more than what average people get after graduation. The only thing which is demolished is your creativity. That creativity is somewhere lost in preparing new IITians for the future.

To conclude, here is what I feel these days:

– Born
– After your reach 8-10th Class, join an IIT Coaching for the preparation.
– If selected, spend 4 years of your life in learning the best engineering education from the best institute in India (yes India, IIT doesn’t rank good when you consider the whole world)
– After four years, don’t go for jobs in the core sector.
– Get hired in a coaching institute and earn.

While apart from all this business, somewhere lies the Anand Kumar’s “Super 30” IIT program. The man who believes in improving the future of the country by nourishing those students , who don’t want to get into IITs for the “IITian tag” but wants to do something great for the progress of our nation.
